Last week we visited the second of our “Pub/hotel" high teas, the location was the iconic Subiaco hotel. The destination of many an after work gathering, first dates and delightful dinners, not to mention a great place to watch the football (AFL) But today, as mentioned we were here to sample their once a month ( Saturdays only) Hightea.
How did we find her ? You will have to keep reading ;)
We arrived on a gorgeous sunny afternoon, that perfect weather kind of day. Not sizzling hot and not chilly and cold. Which worked out well as we were sitting out on their front terrace, which is only partially shaded. More on that a little later.
As with any hotel/pub the service is a mixture of friendly and welcoming to frantic and distracted the next. We are ok with this (as long as our needs are met of course) as it’s a Pub style high tea we are trialing today and not a 5 star hotel or restaurant.
Our drinks order was promptly taken, English breakfast tea for myself and a mocha latte for Anna. As has become our custom we decided to try a cocktail or in this case, two. The frothy and zesty Lemon Meringue at $22 and the Ruby Martini also at $22 both were very delicious, well balanced and importantly pretty to look at.
Our tower or in this case, our triangle arrived very swiftly by one of the hotels friendly staff members. We didn’t receive any information on our tower but again we are hightea ing more casually today so can’t be overly picky on this point. We spent some time discussing and capturing all the delicate delights delivered to us so you too can experience the visual delights on offer.
We had a quick temperature check of the scones, as they were cold (and unusually firm) we decided we would start as usual, with the savouries. We have been discussing between ourselves, whether it is sensible to start with the scones? Particularly if they are presented warm to the table. It makes sense that we should experience them still warm and not after the savouries, when by this time they will have cooled. Scones as all of you will know, are best enjoyed warm.
We enjoyed the vast selection of savouries ( 7 in total) on offer, the stand outs for us were the Truffle egg, tapenade, mayonnaise & chives sandwich finger and the caramelised pumpkin & feta tart with sage & sunflower seeds.
Next we enthusiastically reached for the scones, always a true favorite. I will start with the positive, they were very soft and delicate in the centre(when we manage to get into one) However, the external was sadly like a rock, we haven’t experienced anything like it before. Interestingly they were very pale in color. So not over cooked. Just rock hard. The cream was wonderful, perfect texture and flavor. The jam was overly sweet.
At this point we noticed one of our Petit fours had melted due to the sun now having made its way onto our table, it was a little puddle of dark chocolate & raspberry something. We didn’t try and we weren’t offered any replacements which was a shame. The kind ladies did however find us a nice table inside, which was so much cooler for the rest of our high tea.
The stand out by a mile was the tiny little squares (2) of soft triple chocolate goodness, similar to a mud cake but also like a brownie. The perfect combination, we could have enjoyed more of them and nothing else at this point. They were that good.
To finish, the Subiaco is a vibrant option in a great location. The perfect place to enjoy a high tea for your girlfriend’s birthday, a hens kitchen tea (do they still have these ?) Or a lovely brunch(sweet) idea instead of the usual classic menus on offer.
Small notes: The Subiaco does only hold these high teas once a month on a Saturday, so plan ahead and book quickly so you don’t miss out. If you are on the terrace ask to be closer under the awning so you don’t get sunburnt or your high tea starts melting. They do also have lovely cooler tables on offer inside as another option for you.
Would we recommend? Absolutely, despite the scones being disappointing, everything else was amazing and we cant have everything! The Subiaco Hotel's is the best value hightea we ever had so far.
Price is a remarkable $45 p.p (with teas, coffees waters & juices included)
